No Smart Card Law!
Our state politicians are
trying to force a national ID card on us in the form of a
drivers license that contains a computer chip.
Not a Voluntary
Card
Our state politicians say
the smart card would be a voluntary card. However, the
Smart Card Forum (the consortium of government and
industry that is pushing the card) is planning for the
smart card to be used in all economic levels of our
society.
"Every
facet of business and government share a vision of smart
cards as an enabling component in payment systems,
information networks, consumer marketing and citizen
services" (Smart Card Forum web site)
cooperation across
government agencies is necessary to the
successful implementation of smart card technology (Smart
Card Forum web site)
The Smart Card Forum has
the following working groups to work out details of how
smart cards should be implemented: Transportation,
Telephony, Education, Retail, Travel & Entertainment,
Legal and Public Policy, and Government.
(Smart Card Forum literature) These groups span all
aspects of our economy!
The CEO of IC One, the
company that would make smart cards for Utah, said the
cards would not be "economically feasible" if
they were voluntary (Salt Lake Tribune, April
20, 1997)
It is obvious that smart
cards are more than a state-level drivers license effort.
They are a national effort to change our economic
structure. Implied in this is a high level of cooperation
and data sharing between all groups using smart cards.
Government Can
Become Big Brother
"what are the
privacy implications in a stored value world [i.e. smart
cards] where the documentary trail of small item
purchases, telephone toll records, transportation
records, etc. could translate readily into a diary
of a person's daily movements - where, when, with whom,
for how long?" (Smart Card Forum web site)
